Waterloo is a trashy album, even though the title track is not half as bad as you described it.
In any case, I don't associate ABBA with Waterloo or with that insipid festival, but with the period I mentioned above (1975 – 1977 circa). Catchy and memorable pop songs, perfect hooks, lovely vocal harmonies... you name it...
Btw, I really doubt that ABBA took themselves and their output too seriously. They were unpretentious guys after all.

well If you want pop in its PUREST form then it will have to be the Beatles. Yes abba did contribute to pop music and look what rubbish came out under their influence- remeber the great abba revival of 2000? point taken.

that's silliness squared.
anyone contest that led zeppelin were one of the greatest thinga to happen to mankind? no.
BUT
they did spawn a genre which was at best, 90 percent shitty, metal. a band isnt just judged solely by its influence

ok - i'll change the argument. Led Zepplin always had quality though- abba didnt- there was something crass from the start. I honestly dont think its irony either and lyrically the majority of the songs are quite awful.

lyrically, i agree..but then again, there have been a lot of great bands with poor lyrics
ABBA are cheesy, they are meant to be so, they are totally devoid of irony or pretention whatsoever. they obviously knew they werent hip, so its obvious there's gonna be a massive hipster avoidance. That makes them more loveable, if anything

Their last three albums (including Coda) leave a lot to be desired. Apart from a few cuts here and there, they're nothing but horrendous.
Same goes for 80% of Led Zeppelin's catalogue. And I don't listen to ABBA for the lyrics for fuck's sake!

The thing is Abba's music is soo accessible that it loses it's spark and it sounds empty. Decent pop doesnt do this- I mean this has been proven in the sixties as well- listen to bill haley then then to the slew of teenage pop songs that were rushed out afterwards- it's accessibility means that depth is lost. There is no challenge at all.

ABBA's music isn't meant for people who seek depth. Why should music always be deep and challenging anyway? I spent 5 years of my life digging solely deep stuff, only to realize that I was missing out a lot.
Furthermore, ABBA knew that they weren't up to scratch to produce 'deep' music. In fact, most of ABBA's output is lightweight pop.
Deep? No. Challenging? No. Inventive? Not much. Rewarding? Definitely.

thats the point though- by deep im not meaning intense but when one listens to something that is instantly catchy it easily becomes boring.

There are many exceptions to the rule... and I think that is what makes a good pop song. I could list an entire... erm.. list of songs off the top of my head... but I'm not going to.. because i'll let you think about it...

oh im sure I can name some- but a song which hits you instantly wont last long. In fact I remeber you and I discussing the third eels album and we both listened to it for about a month and getting bored with- reason why- too accessible and same with the first strokes album . when an album requires a bit more effort the result is much better like
Forever changes
Marquee Moon
White Blood Cells
Lamchop.
very long list.

I own some of the most inaccessible records that have ever been released in history, but that doesn't hold me back from enjoying ABBA or similar acts nevertheless.
