To each his own! That anyone should prefer The Bends (a great album) over Ok Computer (a perfect album) for me is inconceivable. But this all boils down to personal preference. Mmmmm....hence "Ghalhekk il-baqra tinbiegh kollha". Last time I checked it had the very same meanng

An excellent selection- I think that sonic Nurse is one Sy's best albums- and certainly their most melodic and Neutral Milk Hotel is brilliant do you like The Polyphonic Spree or the Hidden Cameras?

i wanted to try out the hidden cameras album after hearing 'golden streams' song. then i thought about the look of my friends' face when i say that im hearing 'gay folk' music and picked up a soppy ryan adams record instead which is incidently just as embarassing.
did i miss much? im dying to hear the polyphonic spree though!

The Hidden Cameras first album (the smell of our own) is bloody brilliant- very catchy, happy tunes (i wont expand on the content here though). I personally really don't feel squeamish about such things as long as there's a melody (another album I like is matmos' a chance to cut is a chance to cure- which grosses people out as well) Try buy it and chuck that Ryan Adams cd in a furnace (a fiery furnace?)- he was only good in Whiskeytown. The Hidden Camera's second album (missuaga goddamn) was released on monday 19th and is just as good but not that immediate.
A friend of mine described the Polyphonic Spree as the music brian wilson will listen to when he goes to heaven. Musically it is very similar to the last four Flaming Lips albums and the last two Mercury rev ones. The first album, minus the horrendous 30min track is superb and the second, coming out this monday, is more bombastic but gets away with it.

Just a short note in defence of Ryan Adams. His first three albums (Heartbreaker, Demolition- to a certain extent and Gold) are masterpieces in my opinion. Heartbraker is an essential album, especially lovers of country/folk. His recent stuff is a bit difficult to comprehend... i think it reflects his state of confusion. Love is Hell Part 1 is a good try... with some extremely well crafted songs but it lacks the greatness of earlier albums.
And let me get this off my chest:
Flaming Lips are a terribly overrated band. At most, they are third-rate. And they are absolute RUBBISH live (I watched them twice... both times unwillingly). Their stage act and all the animals running around (wow.. how original... how funny) the stage are clearly a ploy to deviate the people watching the band from realising how absolutely abymsal their music is.....
Ditch the rabbit and the funny looking tree and learn how to sing... that's what I say.

I am no Ryanista and have only heard Heartbreaker. I thought it was great at first but i quickly got tired of it.
I cannot help but love the Flaming Lips even though i agree that they are over rated. They have a rare child like playfulness which i think makes up for their less than stellar sonic talents.
Can you sincerely not smile while hearing Superman or Ego Tripping on the Gates of Hell?

Why are they over rated - They were virtually unknown in America until she don't use Jelly became a hit and in Uk they became famous through The Soft Bulletin- when you'rre ten albums old and become famous by your ninth, that's not really overatedness is it? plus have you heard?
Hit to death in the Future head? Transmissions from the satellite heart? Clouds taste metallic? oh my gawd it's the Flaming Lips?
listen to these and your opinion will be change, im sure of it.After all you can't diss a group if you've only heard two albums can you?

I can diss them on a couple of live performances that left much to be desired.....
Of course they are overrated... they should never have got big enough that people in Malta, for example, have actually heard of them.

Though it points out that with the internet and mp3s today people have great access to music. Small bands can get recognition by anyone as we do not depend on our puny record stores to acquire music.

Don't forget that the race for the prize video was on mtv, which helps as well- It's about time the Maltese learnt about a cult band, it will do them some good. I know im not going to get any FL converts now,but i will definitely defend them- no other band has been close to the melodies that they've made, especially on the older albums,Not even the great Frank Zappa ever conceived of an album that had to be played simultaneously on four cd players, that's why i find them quite special, as for wayne coyne's voice blame neil young, he started that type of singing

Well... of course Flaming Lips appeared before the Internet era... but never mind... you are trying to distract from the original argument..
Which reminds me.. Have any of you seen the Cisk Export adverts on VHI and MTV? I got the fright of my life when I heard CISK EXPORT... let the party start or something like that...
Go malta. Gulp.
