hmm yeah there's something about prince's music (the golden years anyway) which makes it very very appealing despite its obviously dated sound and cheesy sounds. boq. he's still one of the best solo artists ever.

As The great Brian Eno said: 'He is the producer's producer'
and i dont find him that dated, just a bit. Still sign o the times is an album worth having.

Choosing the albums I love most is an impossible task, but here are a few:
Revolver (Beatles)
Debut, Vespertine (Bjork ... the most significant artist of the 90s)
In A Silent Way (Miles Davis)
InSides (Orbital)
Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (Wu-Tang Clan)
A Love Supreme (John Coltrane)
Siamese Dream (Smashing Pumpkins)
And No More Shall We Part (Nick Cave)
Rain Dogs (Tom Waits)
The Velvet Underground & Nico (The Velvet ...)
Iaora Tahiti (Mouse On Mars)
Blood On The Tracks (Bob)
Surfer Rosa (Pixies)
Washing Machine (Sonic Youth)
Endtroducing (DJ Shadow)
Queen Is Dead (Smiths)
... just a few.

(Bjork ... the most significant artist of the 90s)
Why?
In my opinion there were other significant artists during the 90's...Faith No More, the Prodigy and Rage Against the Machine come to mind...

I'll tell you why Bjork is the most significant artist of the nineties:
1) she mixed rock with IDM (intelligent dance music to you guys)
2) She's NEVER repeated herself
3) her rampant eclectism has influenced many 90's groups hell even Deftones are bjork fans and will continue to influence.
4) she's always had the best producers and remixers. I mean she mangaged Matmos to produce Vespertine and those two are recluses
5) She is a female singer but doesn't sing constantly about being a woman in a man's world.
I'll think of more just wait

Bob answered your question. I would also add that she is a visionary and a COMPLETE artist:
> she has the image, the theme, the vision ... you can see all of this in her music, the way she dresses, her music videos, her artwork, etc...,
> her live performances are captivating to say the least,
> she is constantly exploring new musical terratories, new 'sounds', ... i would say that she is one of the forerunners in electronic music, she is arguably unrivalled in the style of music she performs in ... a style which is constantly evolving and full of excellent bands and artists.
> her music is very emotional but not corny.
> her music is exciting and ground-breaking but not too avant-garde or witty,
> Debut still sounds fresh after all these years,
> Vespertine must be one of the best electronic albums I have ever heard,
> her voice is supernatural,
> she writes beautiful music,
> she writes beautiful lyrics,
> she writes beautiful music.
There.
P.S. - Apart from the above, she also gave an excellent performance (for which she received a Cannes Best Actress award) in Lans Von Trier's Dancer In The Dark. Nothing to do with her music but I'm sure it looks good on her artistic CV.

Bjork...I don't know , I've got real mixed feelings about her. I've followed her career from day one , 'birthday' ...the sugarcubes , their debut album was quite something for the time and I even saw them , on their 2nd album UK tour at brixton academy I remember, 88 I think . She had to go solo with that plonker singing ( or shouting obnouxiosly more like it) over her vocals. Thing is you've said that she's versatile however to me she seems to put on the same vocal performance on each song which can get very tedious.
In a just world someone like Mark Kozelek and so so many others deserved more success than her.

I'm sorry but vellamatic and bob's reasons do not convince me that Bjork is the MOST significant artist of the 90's. That's quite a bold statement to make and I think it's quite an exageration.
Although I like some of her work (I admit I haven't listened to alot of her work) more often than not I find her downright irritating.

well, i think she is the most significant FEMALE artist of the 90s, at least.. let's face it, PJ Harvey is a Patti smith rehash (i like her a lot, mind you), like tori amos kate bush etc..
i can see how one can find her irritating, but her significance cannot be ignored. she's definietly one of the most 5 significant artists of the 90s..
