Yeah Idlewild are brilliant- have you ever heard paint nothing from their first album? That's my fave song saying that the remote part is their most mature album.

Hey bob, great to hear that I'm not the only Maltese person into Idlewild. I don' have their first album ... but it's on my 'to buy list'.
Btw, watch out for their new album in a couple of months.

lately i've got meself a copy of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. What do you think of this record? I found it quite a stomach full. Gives me a headache but its compelling and awe inspiring.

Man , loveless is ace. I adore MBV A LOt and loveless is a true modern classic- give it time and the melodies will sort themselves out and you'll be infatuated by the record. If you want a beginners guide to MBV i suggest you get their second album isn't anything or their ep (which is available) glider, ive only heard one track from this one though. MbV's main influence is Sonic Youth and Spaceman 3 I would check those out as well.

I really like the Loveless album although the Isn't Anything EP is much more accessible and has something special to it too. My Bloody Valentine influenced by Sonic Youth? Another SY fan suffering delusions of grandeur ??

1) Isn't anything is not an e.p. It is their second album. The first one is more ep-ish. Im sorry sounding pedantic- but it is more accessible and the sound is warmer as well.
2)Kevin Shields practically worships lee renaldo. In the early days of MBV he used to attend SY concerts in order to copy his guitar technique

do you own most of these albums?
this is quite a debatable list- loads to argue about (but I wont)
its a pity no-one ever mentions Beat Happening- three quarters of the american groups mention (80's onwards) wouldn't have existed without them. Jamboree and you turn me on are one the best 80's albums ever released- pity.

Yeah I own most of that stuff. Actually that is part of a list of my musical collection. I compiled that list some time ago. The list is debatable of course, but which list isn't? That list isn't meant to be a Comprehensive Guide to the History of Rock N' Roll or whatever. Some inclusions in fact are not even important or influential. It's just a list of album picks of some bands I happen to be into. I thought that maybe some members might be interested to check some of them. I heard about Beat Happening but I haven't heard them yet. In fact, they're on my want list.

Putting Abba in such a list is felony. if i had the money i would buy the rights for every abba song, together with every single record in private collections then burn them in wonderful camp fire. Stop the Swedish horror squad now!

i hate ABBA as well- but from listening to them I learnt what you should NEVER do when composing a song.
Dont use a dictionary to think of words- be spontaneous
Dont use cheap melodies
Lyrics have to protray depth
see Flabba are important as well!

Their first three albums are horrendous but ABBA (1975), Arrival (1976) and The Album (1977) are among the best pop albums of the 70's. Sadly, most people seem to overlook their contribution to pop music. It seems that it has become cool and trendy to pour dirt on such acts, but maybe that's part of being 'alternative' you know... ABBA in their prime were more than a cheesy band for sissies (or for teenage drunk EF students ). You may dislike the band but you can't deny their talent.

of course there are a lot of debatable artists (dio, cranberries, gary jules etc ;D)
but ABBA are definitely not debatable.. you cannot get better than ABBA for unashamed good pop. and i mean POP, not an indie band who happen to make catchy songs

Well, as I see it, the whole point of ‘being alternative’ is not hearing the same musical arrangements with lyrics of ‘barney and friends’ calibre over and over again.
Abba won the eurovision with
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo
Thats a very big stigma to grow out of!
