What are your 10 favourite local bands of all time...
I'll start (in no particular order whatsoever)
Filletti & Friends Schostakovic's Nightmare Spookey Monkey Aunteater Norm Rejection Walter Micallef (Ok, he's not a band but still) Victims Of Creation Featuring Oblong Violent Version
I hear that the Hinge and Mind's Eye were quite good but I don't remember them.

Glaze? No never heard of them. I think it's a real pity that alot of Maltese bands exit the scene without leaving any recorded material. When it comes to the knitty gritty live performances will stick in the minds of those present, but a recording will leave a legacy for generations to come. I think it's changing nowadays with recording becoming more and more accessible. I had the idea of trying to gather even garage recordings of some of the past bands but it's very time consuming and I don't have much of it... For eg, Mike Bugeja has some cool pics of yesteryear's local bands on www.geocities.com/lib66

Hmmm I've forgotten to mention our best export ever. The beangrowers' did a great job at introducing good local indie to the rest of the world!! I think now they've established their sound and it's got a much more mature sound to it. Their earlier albums were good, but there was something missing which every good band must have. Couldn't quite put my finger on it. Their new album already sounds f****** brilliant! So I'm gonna be glad to get my paws on it.

1. Beangrowers........the best thing to ever happen to the local scene. Perfect combination , Alison , angelic yet menacing voice & good looks , Ian , intelligent , drummer and so many other things , Mark the band's space cadet , every band should have one. They never tried to sound their idols and they don't , they sound like no one else.
2. Lumiere.....Malta's Radiohead no Malta's Interpol no Malta's lo-fi Blur , where there hints of post rock at St James ? (the last time I saw them). Hugely promising & man am I a fan that they have the guts to diss what deserves to gets dissed here in Malta.
3. Rifffs - Characters. Love him or hate him Ray is a talent and a natural songwriter. He lost track along the way , has made some hideous choices but he remains a landmark for our music scene. Ray had all the ingredients to become a rock star. Especially in his heyday , the 80's when he looked the shite. He used to come back from the UK looking like a Rock God, and this is when Malta was way too conservative. He had it all , wild mood swings , unreliable , insecure but also on his day a top guy. Fron my personal side of things he was always a perfect gentleman and I recpect him enough for that alone. I'm refering to him in the past , however I still believe he can come back with something that will surprise the crap out of us. I remember one night at BJ's he was jamming with some guys when the electricity died on us. Ray got out his acoustic , sat done and started playing in the then candle lit room. Absolute magic.
4. The Subverts.....80's alternative band that my friends and I followed religiously. Mike their singer-guitarist had a Flock of Seagulls hairdo to boot ! They were in line with what was happening then ...the alarm , the cult etc , they did it well though. Then they fought , became two bands , a reunion never materialised . Chalkie their drummer died tragically. I'll never forget going to their jamming sessions. They had these old wooden cinema seats where we sat and watched. They were always so professional in their approach. The subverts saved or mundane weekday evenings and weekend afternoons.
Ok thats 4 for you . I'll think harder.
