Ok in general 2006 was not as good as 2005. Of course there were quality releases but notice how the majority of them came from 'established' bands or groups that have been around for a while. Anyway my following top 20 is no way definite as there are still a couple of releases pending (namely the acoustic ladyland one and Various (productions) .
1. Joanna Newsom - Y's 2. Alela Diane - The Pirate's Gospel 3. Love is All - nine Times that Same Song 4. Liars - Drum's not Dead 5. TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain 6. Yo La Tengo - I am not afraid of you and I will beat your ass 7. Beirut - The Gulag Orkestar 8. Grizzly Bear - Yellow House 9. Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit 10. Matmos - The Rose has Teeth in the Mouth of the Beast 11. The Pippettes - We are the Pipettes 12. Guillemots - Through the windowpane 13. Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped 14. CSS - Cansei de Ser Sexy 15. The Hidden Cameras - Awoo 16. Peaches - Impeach My Bush 17. Camera Obscura - Let's get out of this country 18. Be Your own Pet - Be your Own Pet 19. Yeah Yeah Yeah's - Show your bones 20. Semi finalists - semi finalists
(honourable mention to An Pierle and the white velvet)
best compilation
1a) The Record Shop- 30 Years of Rough Trade Shops 1b) Tropicalia - an Evolution in Sound
The Album that I bought in 2006 that I shouuld have bought in 2005 1a)Petra Haden sings the who sell out 1b) Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punk Underdog World Strike
biggest Disappointment - The Concretes - In Colour

why is it sensless?
cause there's melody
it doesn't want to make you slit your wrists
that it's ........................ (gasp, shock, horror) ENJOYABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ah well an opinion is still one I guess.
it's just a very good pop album. They may not be a band that will be etched on people's minds for decades and it's a momentary pleasure. I've played it quite a bit and there hasn't been something like this in a long time.
plus there's a lot of irony in there too.
and what's so sensless about that?

But what I can't understand is this fear of catchy upbeat music. It's like you guys are dead frightened of hearing something with a full on melody? like you'll lose some credibility if you do. I notice this especially among the 30 year old bunch (not all obviously)
I am really hoping that there a super huge backlash and heel kicking music will dominate.

I'm still way behind on this year's releases, there are tons of records I still have to listen to before I can make a definitive list. For now it's just a list of records I've heard that have impressed me:
Current 93 - Black Ships Ate the Sky (a clear favourite so far) Danielson - Ships Isis - In the Absence of Truth The Knife - Silent Shout Islands - Return to the Sea Sunn 0))) & Boris - Altar A Hawk and a Hacksaw - The Way the Wind Blows Matmos - The Rose has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit Guillemots - Through the Windowpane Diablo Swing Orchestra - The Butcher's Ballroom Clogs - Lantern
