its BRILLIANT...
and bob after much pain and vexation of spirit i can finally say that i think that the new liars album is more delicious than a pastizz ta l-irkotta with a tablespoon of sugar poured inside.
(ps. if you havent tried this fantastic recipe, do so. My grand aunt ate pastizzi with a tablespoon of sugar poured in each once a week and lived till the ripe old age of 86)

guess i need to make my top 10 again on January 1. This week i listened to Devotchka's, TVOTR and Regina Spektor's and i think the last 2 can definately make it up there... Ys is very difficult for me to get and wouldnt place it within my top 10 but surely one which grows with every listen.

The Knife wouldn't be my pick for number one of the year, but it's a stunning album and definitely a top ten for me...I'd say it's a very valid pick for number one.

discussion started on BBC.co.uk
Worst Records of the year!
What records have assaulted your ears this year?
I dont think 2006 was a particularly vintage year for trash - Justin from the Darkness unfortunately not being able to follow up "This Town Ain't Big Enough..." with a whole album, but there were still some highlights - the obvious novelty single success being "Chico Time", but that's disqualified from these awarads as it's supposed to be rubbish. Even Paris Hilton managed a listenable single.
Personal Peeve award : The song I've hated, but everyone else likes was Sandi Thom's "I wish I was a punk rocker" - I wish she was too, then we wouldn't have this Starbucks-folk MOR dirge.
The world cup is always a particularly fertile time for bad records, I think the worst was probably the re-issue of Amarillo (the charity single was OK, "Is this the way to Santa's Grotto" last Christmas was cashing in a little, but "Is this the way to the World Cup" was a version too far.)
Worst band is a shoe in. I love novelty cover bands. Therefore when a novelty cover band makes me want to jab pencils in my ears to cut off the sound, they must be pretty bad. The Puppini Sisters are so bad, only a new album by Mrs Eva Miller (look her up) could displace them. At least the people who release records on the back of reality shows can actually sing.
And the main event... Spinky's worst record of the year... McFly's cover of "Don't Stop Me Now" - taking one of the best Queen songs, and removing it of all urgency and interest takes some doing. McFly, we salute you!

Not an easy task to select my favourite albums of 2006, expecially since I'm still catching up.I've been adding and chopping albums, can't bloody decide on some...whether they're that good or just good etc etc.... Please note I will write the word 'beautiful' a number of times to describe the first albums.
the ones I loved are
EARLY DAY MINERS offshore......I start with EDM's because this album was so me. Everything I love about music practically done on one album. Two long instru dark loud brooding tracks that brought back memories of The God Machine. Two vintage trademark sadcore EDM tacks that simply take yer breath away. A female vocals song that brought back the majesty of Mazzy Star. This song seeps into an amazing slide guitar ambient track (ala Yo La Tango). Offshore is a shortish album , just long enough not to disturb its brilliance. Amazing stuff.
MAX RICHTER songs from before.... genious. Minimal classical music at its melancholic best. So fuckin beautiful. Mix that with tiny electronic bleeps and static radio sounds giving it all such a perfect picture. Shame that Robert Wyatts' reading throughout the album sounds so unconvincing.
JOHANN JOHANNSSON ibm 1401 a user's manual ...I guess he's quite similar to Richter. Both are classical composers but Johannssons music is bigger and more cinematic but still very intimate and haunting nonetheless. Can I say fuckin beautiful again?
HELIOS eingya...Helios is Keith Kenniff aka Goldmund. This album again reminded me of many artists I have loved these past 10 years without being able to actually pinpoint which. The whole album is simply mesmerising. bloody beau...........
MOGWAI zidane ost....thank god for zidane cause Mr.Beast did nothing for me at all. They not only saved face with this album but came back just a few months later stronger and better than ever. When they peak, Mogwai leave all the rest behind and this is mogwai at their delicate best rather than their roaring best.
ELLEN ALLIEN & APPARAT orchestra of bubbles....very versatile , its not just an electronic album. Some memorable melodic numbers to boot. Always liked the two of them individually so their collaboration was one to look out for and they didn't disapoint at all.
JAMES HOLDEN at the controls....the soundtrack to my summer. Probably the best remix album ever. James holden here takes on a number of alt acts and gives them the holden treatment. It goes from hypnotic to electronic but keeps you there wanting more.
CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG 5:55....the most soothing album of the year. Charlotte is no fuckin dido rest assured. You want to sleep with her after the first few tracks. A collaboration with Air (at their best) and others, I couldn't let go of this album for months.
NATHAN FAKE drowning in a sea of love ....I need this on a yearly basis. I missed m83 in 2006 and got Nathan Fake thank you very much. Brilliant album.
GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT all is violent all is bright ...officially released in 05 but just got a uk release last month so I'm adding this since I got hold of it this year. Astronaut make post rock sound simple. They're not pretentious and very melodic. Again this was one I played to death earlier in the year.
others I really liked.......
THE STROKES first impressions ..........I couldn't handle all the hype when they first started but I've come to really love this band.I really feel this album owed more to the 80's than the 70's. Flame me if you want but some tracks reminded me of The Cars and Concrete Blonde.
GERSEY no satellites.....australian band, been away for awhile and came back from an almost shoegazing band to a more direct approach.Seems like they spent their hiatus listening to Editors and Interpol but it all sounds really good. I found myself standing up punching the air during some tracks, I still need that altrock sound occassionally and when its done well, its as good as anything.
SOPHIA technology won't save us.....ah Sophia.....robin is passing thru that'still haven't found what i'm looking for phase.' The song formation on the album is confusing to say the least. He goes from a real haunting instrumental opener (and when I say haunting , read what the music is about on the title track it is indeed a haunting story) to a brilliant pop number and you're thinking...wait a minute...that song came too sudden after I was left breathless. Anyway its Robin Proper Sheppard if you know what I mean. There are some great great numbers on the album.
THE TWILIGHT SINGERS powder burns....twilight singers started as a kinda dancey project for Greg Dulli but he's slowly slowly falling back to his roots ie doing The Afghan Whigs again. This is probably his best rocknroll album since Gentleman. The guy isn't the most gifted songwriter but fuck this guy bares his soul for ya.altsoulbrotha.
ISOBEL CAMPBELL & MARK LANEGAN ballad of the broken seas...thought she was really clever to work with Lanegan. The man is always worth the admission price alone and hearing his rough, ragged drink and drugs vocals mixing it with Isobel's pretty voice is one one to behold....and the songs aren't that bad either.
ARCHIE BRONSON OUTFIT derlang derlang....bloody hell these guys are good. I'm still getting acquainted with this album but its had me at the edge of my seat from track1. Awesome stuff, indie garage rocknroll at its best
SPARKLEHORSE dreamt for light years......safe bet that I'd really like this one. Been a fan from day one and he's on form here.
THE KNIFE silent shout.....I was curious about this album after it made pitchfork's....you know. Really took me by surpise though, I'm loving it.
others I really like
The Racounteurs...Broken Boy Soldier My Latest Novel ...Wolves Howling Bells...Howling Bells (this could make my top list but I'm still getting into it tho I can list some 5 tracks that I really like already) Scott Walker...the drift Calexico...Garden Ruins James Holden....The Idiots are Winning
il-lipa man kemm qilli quddiem il-pc!

Can I say fuckin beautiful again? Wow - this is why i literally love the figure of Jean. His description of music is just great and from the heart. Apart from that i share a lot of his tastes and reading this post i realise how much i need to invest in music till i'm such a great 40 year-old guy! Only listened to 4 or 5 albums from his list so i guess i will be spending these last days of the year looking for the rest

why bob? isn't it a good one? it's a great album! I thought Jean would lump them with arctic monkeys or something like that - they are a spunky guitar band as well - with a more bluesy/garage background
