Thought I start a thread about concert dvds.
Niehu buzz enormi nara concert dvds. I've got myself a small collection now...some 25 i think. They're not stictly all alternative for 2 reasons. 1. most of my favourite alt bands haven't released concert dvds yet 2. if I like the band , ie . I liked them in the past or I still have time for them I'll still watch.
I love watching these dvds with me wee stupendous headphones. I'm normally deaf for the next 24hrs but its worth it.
Just watched Peter Gabriel's 'Still Growing Up.' Mainly shot in Brussels(from his last 2003 tour). I always liked Gabriel , never been a huge fan but he's one of those artists that when I play one of his albums , it all comes flooding back.....huge talent , stunning vocal chords etc etc. He always kept his integrity . Although he's had his fair share of success he never bacame pathetic like say u2 or his peers Genesis and that down right plonker Phil Collins. The concert footage is really really good. The filming and editing are not the best I've seen but its still really good . The performance is at times breathtaking. The moment he sings the first line of 'Red Rain,' I knew I was in for something good. His voice has that certain gravity that leaves you gasping for air. Being an old fart on this board , I don't know how many of yous have seen him doing Biko. Ostja man , that song , live, always does me in. Its one of those 'crowd taking over moments, 'stadium rock at large but its moving nonetheless especially considering gabriel has always been a loyal supporter towards Amnesty International. He's always done this in his own way and never fell for the Live Aids and 8's on this world. Something I couldn't comprehend was his image during this tour. Clad in black with a shaven head , he really went for the Nosferatu look. Ok I don't normally go for his type of session musicians, I'm an alt rocknroll fan however man , those people sharing his stage , madonna , id-drummer man...fuckin'hell. The guitarist's pedal box wouldn't fit in Poxx Bar. insomma great stuff , going now to check the extra dvd now which has Liz Fraser from Cocteau Twins and Paul Buchanan from The Blue Nile sharing some vocals with Gabriel. Should be good.
I'd rate this dvd 8/10
and yous tal-alt malt . what have you seen?

I have:
A Yeah yeah Yeah's Concert DVD - it's a bit overlng - yes karen O goes through 40 different costume changes, empties a packet of crisps down her top and chews a chocolate bar, spit it out and wipe it on her face but musically it lacks clout- still I recomend it
on the belle and sebastian dvd - fans only - there is A LOT of concert footage and it's great - especially the live rendering of the state that i am in which was the higlight of their glastonbury set. On the new album theres another concert dvd which is kind of cool.
that's all that comes to mind at the mo

Ostra Mozzer ...what's wrong mate ?
You didn't mention the Morrissey concert dvd....''who put the 'm' in manchester''.....??
ok I bought this one.
hemmm....lets just say its one of those dvds you enjoy initially in the first week (meta tkun qieghed tifrah bih) but I can't see myself getting it out of the shelve that often in all honesty.
three problems....
1.Morrissey has gained some weight hence making his on stage antics/reflexes rather slow. A shadow of his former self so to speak. 2. His band , although they perform immaculately are rather boring to watch. 3. since at the time he was touring the 'you are the quarry' album, a lot of the set is based on songs from the cd ( fair enough , since he therfore believes in his new stuff and doesn't perform as some nostalgic act)which in general left me wanting.
However its good stuff , watching him do 'rubber ring' 'the headmaster ritual' went down a dream and boy oh boy ...'there is a light' is epic in his shows. Other highlight...'everyday is like sunday.'
Another cool thing about his shows is the people at the front of the stage. One whole struggle , fans climbing on each others bones , trying to beat the ton of bricks type security guys just to get a touch of His Morrissey's hands. Brilliant stuff.
The dvd extra is quite special. tracks taken from the Moon Festival in Manchester. Thousands upon thousands of people singing alongside (again) 'everyday'and 'there is a light' are absolutely goose pimple , suf erection moments.
Overall I'd rate the dvd a 6/10.

Now if some of yous want to buy a concert dvd and don't know where to start or don't know what to buy , look no further ......The Cure's Trilogy.
Fuckin Perfection.
A bit about the dvd..... OK....The Cure performed two unique shows in Berlin in 2002 . ( I think there was a warm -up one in Amsterdam.) In these shows they performed Pornography , Disintegration and Bloodflowers in their entirety , as they are on the albums , from track 1-to...so to speak. Now The Cure are known for their light shows and the show here is simply gracious and beautiful to look at. Makes yer tv screen look like some multi coloured blossoming flower. What I found different from their previous tours is that they over looked the dry ice this time around which was always part and parcel of a Cure show. However again the light show and the visuals are just mind blowing . Blend that with listening to the mesmerizing tracks from those 3 albums (especially the first 2) and you're in for a treat. (let alone being at the feckin gig itself ostra madonna) Robert Smith looks bloated , he actually comes across like some Liz Taylor LOL , but yeah the voice is still there etc etc. Pero if you're looking at watching a stage performance , its hard to beat bassist Simon Gallup. Without putting too much effort Gallup huwa showman tal-madunna, cool as fuck, aged gracefully , u dawk il-basslines ......... Jason Cooper their drummer is really interesting as well. He's not one of those flamboyant drummers but his concentration , technique and precision are second to none and intriguing to watch. Pero the most important factor of this dvd is something that comes amiss on most other concert dvds. The editing. Tal-holm l-editing f'dan il-dvd. Robert Smith did the editing himself and you can appreciate the time and dedication taken. You know how frustrating it can be with concert footage. How good stuff can be missed cause you're getting some face in the crowd instead of on the musican at that vital moment. Not on this one , every off beat , every tiny important guitar piece etc etc are exactly spot on .
10/10...they don't come better than this

Never the less I would mention DM's 101 tour 1987 plus One night in Paris and now can't wait to get the TTA it shld be with me next week.
