Bowie has been a heavy influence on many alt bands. Put it this way , I'd say 80 % of the alt bands that emerged in the 80's were influenced by him. These guys were brought up seeing the likes of Bolan , Bowie , Roxy on TOTP. Don't let Morrissey fool you , he's bitter about Bowie cause he had a rough time when he toured (supported) with Bowie in the 90's . Call it sour grapes. Bowie has touched everyone , from U2 to Bauhaus to Placebo to NIN and Suede that in the end always sounded like Bowie in his glam period.
The bands you mentioned making classic songs ala Bowie....don't make me laugh. None of those people touch Bowie. They don't have the ability to write songs like he did. They're great at what they do , no doubt , but they're never gonna reach the masses like he did cause basically they can't write 'songs' like he did.

Also the amazing thing about Franz ferdinand is that their style of music isn't catered for mass appeal so kudis for them AND they are on an independent (Domino, In america it's distributed by Sony)
