What do you respectable citizens think of the talking heads? I heard them somewhat inexplicably compared to the arcade fire. I had never heard them before so I thought I might give them a try and fill a vacant gap in my music knowledge
I got the new re-mastered ‘The name of this band is the talking heads’ and was somewhat pleasantly surprised especially by the early tracks. Any particular album recommendations? Has anyone tried the lauded concert DVD ‘Stop Making Sense’?

right im a BIG talking Heads fan, after all they are godfathers (and originators) of post punk!
ok the best album to start off with would definitely be the debut : Talking Heads '77. Not only is every tune catchy it puts punk into new dimensions.
However if you want something more superior I definitely suggest Remain in Light. Produced by Brian Eno, there are 8 slices of funk, polyrhythms and offbeat beats. Its a very thrilling record BUT it takes a while to get used to but when it clicks, you're hooked.
Their second album 'more songs about buildings and food' is a development of the debut sound- it is also produced by Brian Eno and is a very strong second album.
all their ideas of african culture comes to fruitition in 'Fear of Music' Personally I think I Zimbra is the best song of their entire career. Its experimental and signified a new direction in punk.
little creatures isn't bad -. It was recorded when the band were hating each other and you can feel that.
true stories and naked are fucking AWFUL avoid like the plague- boring and none of that zest and spark.
incidentally stop making sense was filmed by Jonathan demme- the guy who did silence of the lambs and blow.I loved when I saw it (on video- it was rereleased in 2000).Plus if you intend to buy the album make sure its the expanded one.
thats all i can say.
When the 'heads were about to split david Bryne collaborated with brian eno and did my life in the bush of ghosts- its good but in small doses.
I haven't heard solo byrne albums- just various tracks. Oh but I did hear his soundtrack to bertolucci's the last emperor- its good.
Tina weymouth and chris frantz formed tom tom club and they hit it big with their version of under the boardwalk. Both chicks on speed and mariah carey have sampled or covered (in the case of the former) tom tom club.Avoid the album they produced with the happy mondays (yes please)
Jerry Harrison turned to producing. So far he's done Violent Femmes, crash test dummies and Von Bondies. He's not bad.
and really thats all.I hope thats good enough

do- the amazing thing is that it starts off with david byrne playing a cassette tape and ends with a whole gospel choir.
