You should know i adore female songwriters/vocals etc ... so it wouldnt surprise you if i tell you i consider Scarlets' Walk and From the Choirgirl Hotel of Tori Amos (not to mention all of hers!!) as a "must definately have"
Carmen Consoli is my Italian favourite.
Massive Attack's "100th Window" is also one to have in my descrete opinion.

I'm surprisingly devoid of female-fronted bands in my collection. I don't know why really because I have nothing against female fronted bands per se.
Ironically, my favourite female vocalists are all from years gone by. I think Nico (especially the Chelsea Girl album which is extraoridnary ahead of its times) Nina Simone, Vera Lynn gave something that male vocalists could never hope to achieve. (although Nina Simone does sound uncannily like a man at times)
In the nineties, the female bands I listened to (apart from Belly) mostly revolved around the trip-hop dreamy genre... the female vocals are really suited for this style. Notable voices include Beth Gibbons (Portishead - her solo album is brilliant) Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins) and the girl from Alpha...whose name escapes me.
The only other female vocalists outside these two genres who i hold in high esteem (barring those i've somehow forgotten) are P.J. Harvey, Alison from beangrowers, Isabel (ex Belle and Sebastian).
The most exciting live performance of all time in terms of sexyiness, pure energy and cool was by Ms. Moloko herself, whatever her name is. A performance that blew me away. Top notch.
Right now, I'm listening to a trio of good female-fronted bands: Azure Ray, Ivy and Tram (vocals are both male and female)
Last thing: I'm curious to here the "new" Cerys Matthews album. I was never a huge fan of Catatonia (although I don't think they are bad) but a lot of different individuals praised her album...

The Slits (so good I had to write it twice) The Delta 5 LiliPUT/Kleenex The Flying Lizards The Raincoats X Ray Spex Young Marble Giants Marine Girls ESG Rogers Sisters The Shaggs The Bush Tetras Lizzy Mercier Descloux (man she was ahead of her time) Theoretical Girls and many many more

I've got quite a list but two not mentioned here
Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde , amazing voice and a rock 'n' roll Goddess on stage.
Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders..... she changed my music tastes , I owe her.
Polly of course
many more , including our own Miss Alison Galea . People on this island have never appreciated enough that Alison is an amazing singer and she sounds like no one else . Respect .

I think that Aimee Mann has quite a distinct voice too. She's been around for a while and I think she has always remained with an indie label.
On another front, Kim Deal of the Breeders...
