Just got to listen to the new WS single couple of times. WOH they have gone utterly MAD.
Much louder than Blue Orchid, but with similar vocals. Very heavey and somewhat psychedelic... disjointed, crammed with tempo changes ...a real oddball.
I honestly dont know what to expect after this but it surely seems that they have ditched any sense of modesty.

Ok i downloded it as well - white stripes are a big priority for me.
the song is very led zeppliny but then there's this zappaesque stinky keyborad breakdown which appears twice.
Jack White's yowl is in full swing here.
its a belter. Its feels like someone is stomping on your face.
there's energy.
I like it. But not enough to make me go mental. For soem strange reason I can imagine a lot of metalheads crouching together and performing a group headbang.

Weird piece of news
Jack White’s entire week was ruined by one fan with a bit of influence and a lot of airtime. DJ Electra, who handles afternoons on Chicago alterna-giant Q101, was fortunate enough to stumble across a full version of the White Stripes’ forthcoming and very much anticipated Icky Thump album. She did what any self-respecting superfan with a listenership of several hundred thousand rock fans would do – she put that shit on the air. While this may have delighted those odd folks who were listening to terrestrial radio at 2 p.m. yesterday a whole lot, it didn’t go over so well with Mr. White - and he held nothing back in letting Electra and her superiors know it. By 4 p.m., he’d placed a call to the station, from Spain no less, to express his extreme disgust with Electra, the station, and the music industry at large. Though Q101 is honoring Jack’s request to not air the phone call, Electra kicked out some details on her blog, including the fact that Icky Thump may never mean the same thing to her again.
I wonder why Jack White had to tell everyone it leaked. Goldrush begins!

i like it a real lot... very odd record, very heavey, very quirky.. i do miss the quiet moments though.
What would you say if I suggest that the White Stripes might very well turn out to be the best rock band of this decade? (as in 2000-2010)
In terms of importance, consistency and innovation i think they are up there with the very very best

I haven't icky Thump yet but as '00 rock goes, the only other band I think which fits that description are animal collective.
saying that the white stripes released albums in the nineties too

If you're limiting it to bands that have had commercial success and the average person in the street will have heard, then as a rock band they haven't had much competition this decade - the only other "mainstream" rock band on their level I can think of is Queens of the Stone Age, and they've been going downhill with their last two albums.
But if we're talking about pure quality, not about an impact in the larger cultural sphere, then, though I like the White Stripes, there are a lot of bands I'd pick over them.

Limiting it to bands that can loosely be categorized as "rock" (omitting folk, electronic etc.) and who are primarily an 00s band:
The Arcade Fire Deerhoof The Decemberists Gogol Bordello Clinic Modest Mouse Comets on Fire Wolf Parade Elbow
I do like the White Stripes, but I wouldn't really say they're the best of anything this decade.

but to be more precise lets stick to bands that have started to release albums fromm 2000 onwards. In this case deerhoof, modest mouse and clinic are off the list.
i bought icky thump and I like it- less sloppy than get behind me satan and yet its ecelectic too. I do wish that they would come up with a song like hotel yorba though. I was discussing the album with another forumite yesterday and he thinks the next album will probably folky. I agree.
