I mean techinically speaking loads of music is emo but if you want a purists term then emo is short for emocore which is short for emotional Hardcore. usually that includes aggressive chords, whining about your crapness with girls and lots of gothic posturing.
i have an american friends who used to send loads and loads of it. I still say huser du, fugazi, jimmy eat world and rites of spring stand out

There's no such thing as emo. how can say a certain genre of music doesn't exist?? i detest emo of any kind but i recognise it's there, and do my best to avoid it thank god it hasnt hit malta in any bad way. If "emo" exists then the term could be applied to any type of popular music since forever. Take blues for example. You only call it emo rock or whatever because it is most evident it's current form represented as upbeat pop punk.

Another "emo" band would be Black Sabbath. They just didn't use the term back then.

It's as ambiguous generalization as calling music pop or alternative but even more so.
I don't group music into genres for the sake of music itself.

urban dictionary describes it as punk music on estrogen. For type of sound Fall out boy, Afi have. That is very accurate.

well yeah its one of those terms which is impossible to pin down.
basically people who dont like emo consider it very derigatory. . it reminds them of self harming drama queens and bad blink 182 haircuts.
but my brain still attaches emo with a particular type of warm punkish often overwrought sound.
anyway music classification is generally something to keep rock scribes employed

anyway music classification is generally something to keep rock scribes employed Nah.....it's there because people like the brand not the music. Brands like "emo rock" "heavy distorted rock" "pop punk for posers" "hip pop rock" "phat hip hop" and my fave "easy listening music".

It's as ambiguous generalization as calling music pop or alternative but even more so. I don't group music into genres for the sake of music itself. ha ha when you write reviews, no matter how hard you try you cant help putting things into genres plus im a librarian with my specialization being cataloguing (and children's literature), doubly so. here are some classic emo bands Discount promise ring braid Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
