Just started listening to their new album Antics. First impressions , it seems more melodic than their debut album. Hasn't blown me away yet , but these are early days and I've got some 50 new albums to listen to , its just insane.

i'm really liking it. much better than the first album in fact. it's much more rewarding.. if the first one was them listening to a bunch of joy division, this is them listening to echo and the bunnymen, which is never a bad thing

Damn.
That Interpol connection with Joy Division really can't go away! I'd lynch the fucking critic (oh god how I hate ALL music critics... and that automatically includes YOU (bob) ) who decided that Interpol sound like Joy Division.
I suspect he was trying to impress his mates that he knew who Joy Division were....
goes to show that "spoken" music is a load of bollocks!

But they sound a bit like joy division- In fact bar a few bands you are always going to hear an influence- no matter what. Anyway you dont have to listen to the critic- it's just an opinion. The only thing I hate about critics is the way they kiss the ass of a band and then break them down mercilessly, or even worse, hold grudges against them. Mansun, Shed Seven (who weren't THAT terrible) and Gene. In that situation I think the critic is wrong

Duff , I don't think critics were trying to be hip by comparing Interpol to Joy Division. If you try to sing like Ian Curtis , then I guess you're asking for it. I can't wait to start reading the reviews for 'Antics.' After listening to it a few times I think Interpol can be bracketed in that ' difficult second album ' syndrome , because at best the album is mediocre. Antics sounds too much like their debut album with the only difference being that there aren't as many good songs.
I really can't hear the Echo & The Bunnymen comparison either. In their heyday Echo pissed all over Interpol believe you me.

actually obstacle one sounds more like JD's interzone
Of course E+ B pisses all over Interpol but interpol have that grand unstadium sound that echo had.
Duff why do hate comparision- im sure when you play music you unconsciously think of your influences.

I don't mind comparisons but some pigeonholing is ridiculuous.
BTW, now that you mention it, I remember when everyone used to say Gene are a bad copy of the Smiths...
That was really unfair.
Interpol are a great band. Let's give them space to develop rather than branding them immediately.
I hate fucking music critic twats.

I used to hate it when critics say something like that. But no one said that Interpol are like joy division- its just that they have a similar sound and so far no-one's pigeonholed yet. Well I dont do it in my reviews and I try to see each band as an individual (although I did compare The Cribs to The Strokes- but that's because there were very heavy similarities). So not every critic does that!

But of COURSE Gene were a poor man's Smiths.
They should come complete with an official mornning. They had a couple of good tracks on their albums but the end-product was always average. That goes for their debut "Olympian" too.
and...just to set the record straight. The fact that Interpol sound a fair bit like Joy Division was never meant to detract from their appeal Duff. I personally love "Turn On The Bright Lights" but you can't deny it's hard shaking off Ian Curis' ghost whilst listening. I will also admit that I'm quite influenced by both Curtis AND Hunter. "Under a Tuscan Sky" is an homage to both lads.
