I agree there. A lot of the media is bent on presenting an image. Unfortunately if you believe your own hype its a road to diaster

thanks for the link.. i hadnt been there in quite a while!
the problem with doherty is that he feeds off the media attention. prime example would be the whole libertines jail theft story... their setting up a gig exactly after he gets out of the cell. then making a self referential second album. then they fight. then break up... then they are back again etc
one starts to suspect that its not only the media inventing crap. He is the main player in the tabloid crap story frontpage machine.

well exaggerations do happen. The media has to make the star as exciting as possible.

If you read the story of creation records (essentially the story of Alan McGee), you get a strong sense of deja vu when reading about Doherty.
McGee went thru it all: drugs, depression, millionaire, bankrupt. The way he ran Creation - he was bluffing his way thru all the time, with a big helping hand from the media who were always very happy to lap up his latest spin. Maverick is the word.
Oasis were pefect for him - they were brash, arrogant and very street. Very ambitious and very extravagant.
And now he is managing the Libertines, and as far as I know even Pete Doherty.
I think the Libertines are an OK band, above average and with the potential to really strike some raw nerves when they are on target ... but they are no Oasis (and really and truly, Oasis mkI and II, although they still deliver some great songs on their latest). The not so hidden hand and ever scheming mind of Alan McGee is at play in all this - they are as much about the hype as they are about the music. Sorry if I'm offending any libertines/babyshambles/doherty fans. Its the truth as I see it.

betabean as far as i know (subject to correction) he's (mcgee) not managing pete doherty...regards the comment that the libertines are no oasis...well oasis have been reproducing the same sounds over and over..they aren't as good as they were in their first 2 albums. What I find stupid is that many ppl seem to be more interested in discussing all the crap written in the press rather than music itself!

But if you do read the Creation Story Mcgee was doing this all the time. He is a schemer and knew how to get people into the public eye.

i love the libertines too. pete doherty really excels in the acoustic songs like France(libertines i think) and albion(babyshambles).a time for heroes is a brilliant song too. the new album is out and i will be sure to get it. i just love their sound
