I think a new album by Radiohead deserves a new thread To reply to Bob's message re. quality in another thread. Well the quality is slightly less than CD quality which is not bad imo (considering you can get it for practically free). Probably this reduction in quality was also planned to keep the files smaller (due to bandwidth issues) since as expected, thousands are downloading the album today .... In the mean while I've heard 2 tracks on XFM UK and its lookin good

its very good
The standout track for me is: House Of Cards. I listened to it some ten times and it keeps crawling over me. For sme odd reason it reminds me of Sabbath's 'Changes'. Incredible song.
Weird fishes and Nude also struck me as excellent.
I would say itsin the neighborhood of HTTT.
It's a relief that they are still capable of writing beautiful tunes.

I love House of Cards..
the first track is another standout .. Sounded like a (non)love song to me but read somewhere that its about Tony Blair and his falling for the whole Iraqi nonsense.
Better not to pin it down.

5.50 sterling - 4 liri
forst impression - hail to the thief part two - except mellower. My fave track is reckoner - especially when the strings hit and i love bodysnatchers.
it doesnt really excite me though - they lost their edge

the fact that people are already divided on the best tracks is already a good sign.
I heard it again this morning. It's sounding really good to me bar a couple of tracks with are merely ok as opposed to excellent.
Bob what do you mean by 'edge'?
Which band still sounded edgy after some seven studio albums? One has to be realistic. They went from all out guitar pop to dense keyboards throughout their work so far. What more can you realistically expect? The only thing that I remain curious about is whether they can or can't deliver a set of upbeat tunes in the future. Other than that I can't see them exploring more areas. It's either going on delivering solid songwriting or disband.

hehe rem did automatic was their 7th in fact. well by edge I dont mean experimentation, In rainbows has something lacking but like you said it's a very solid and sturdy album with songs that other bands would kill for but it's not up to radiohead's standard, it seems that they've found a niche and are confortable with it.

every band does it sooner or later bob.
To be honest with you I think that this reaches the level of anything they did after Kid A.
Upon repeated listening its revealing itself a joy.

It doesn't have the kind of explosive power of hail to the thief. Yet, it has more consistency and packs more nuance.. I like it better.

here's a description from david barker (editor of the 33 1/3 series)
Listening to the Radiohead album on my headphones, I can’t shake the thought that this record sounds like a Mercedes-Benz. It’s a luxury cocoon, coddling you in sumptuous leather, hi-tech climate control systems, finished with an exotic walnut trim and discreetly padded with dozens of perfectly placed miniature airbags. It feels like music made by rich people, in a very rich studio. Damn, I feel spoilt just listening to it! Every click, every hum, every whirr, every vowel – it all sounds so perfectly engineered and constructed, hermetically sealed to keep the world at bay. Even the skuzzy guitars on “Bodysnatchers” (a wonderful song, up there with “House of Cards” as my favourite) have been precisely and repeatedly honed, so they’re not really dirty at all. “Stay with us, in here,” Thom is whispering. “We’ll look after you.”
If you’re feeling even remotely guilty about underpaying for your download of In Rainbows, and maybe want to send some hard-earned cash the way of a band and label that could probably use it, why not try the Sequins? Straight outta Coventry, they have the same nervous, skittery intensity as Radiohead – it’s just cheaper, simpler, more lovable, more Altered Images than Talk Talk. You can pre-order the debut album The Death of Style from Tough Love Records right now, and they’ll let you download all the songs in advance. The album’s handmade, sequintastic packaging looks much sexier than Radiohead’s deluxe discbox, too. And I can’t hear any songs on In Rainbows as inspired as “Let’s Go Drinking in the Morning” or epic closer “The French Way of Life,” either. Roll down the windows, breathe in the chilly air, rev up your crappy little engine, and take a spin.
I havent heard sequins yet

In Rainbows is a different record for Radiohead. I would say that this is the natural arrival point if you go from Kid A/Amnesiac through HTT. This is the most organic Radiohead on record, its like somebody took away most of thier toys and left them with a bare minimum. The use of strings, acoustic guitars, the small sounding drums, the use of Toms vocal harmonies is quite a fresh take imo. The very essence of Radiohead is still there, the songwriting is excellent.
No obvious singles here but if you pull off a trick like they did by making the music available for download and getting the attention of the world's media like they did, who needs one. Radiohead use their celebrity status wisely.
This is a great album, one of their strongest yet.

David Barker made up his own mind.
So did I.
As if Amnesiac and HAil to The Thief did not sound like a Mercedes Benz!
The only really 'dirty' radiohead album is The Bends. Everything they did afterwards was laden with polished production. It didn't make them any worse for it.
