of course you like it bob ... there are all your favourite bands there :-)
I agree with 'Cat Power' scoring fairly high in the list, whilst Bob Dylan and the Monkeys should have got a higher position. Albums that I wouldn't have placed there? Def. the Flaming Lips one which was very average.
also lily allen in that list ... che schifo.

*blush* well it doesn't mean they are all necessarily new. I only buy about three cds from the net a month and every fortnight i order one from exotique. Plus im on good terms with certain labels as a loyal customer and I buy from america which is dirt cheap. 1 cd including postage is not more than LM 5.50.
the next argument being that cause i listen to quite a bit I can't absorb an album properly. Well it depends. Because im into very melodic music it's not that difficult to remember cause the tunes stick in my head. Also I spent two years committing myself fully to the classic albums and practically every band today has their roots in the past.
there really is no such thing as a band that doesn't have its roots somewhere even xper.xr (these guys create tunes out of car engines - i have a documentary of them composing one song) have their origins in industrial like einstruzende Neubaten.
most days originality is culled from the amount of different genres you can mash together. Which i don't mind. It creates new sounds.
the exception being bjork (imo) totally out there.
my point being its not too difficult to get used to an album as there are many throwbacks to styles.

I might as well start using this to rave about rough trade shops compilations
so.......
there will be two new compilations released on the same day (jan 29th- probably the date will change)
one will be counter culture 2006 (very highly recommended, the counter culture series is a great way of discovering new artists and finding out about releases which escaped from the annual best of lists)
the other will be counter culture 1976 (I usually notice that when rough trade focus on the post punk era they weird out so this should be good)
more news tracklisting etc later on - although saying that Beirut's' postcards from italy' will feature

ok recieved it on saturday.
the 1976 compilation is fantastic and faultless.
as for the 2006 counter culture welllll 2006 was a weak year music wise so there werent as many gems as usual the loud cd is more consistent than the quiet one though. i'll be going into more detail in the what you're listening... thread tomorrow.
next compilation will be 'protest vol 1' and will be out in march.
bet you any money billy bragg will be on it.As dylan is too obvious for rough trade shops compilations it will probably be bragg covering dylan. i expect some reggae too.

There's a full list of the Rough Trade Compilations here: zenbullets.com/blog/?p=58 The name John Peel probably won't mean to much to anyone outside the UK though.

Although there are inconsistensies ( spelling?) 1) the rough trade website lists them all 2) counter culture 02, electronic 01 and rock and roll 01 do not have extensive sleevenotes, those appeared with post punk 01
other than that - he's right. they are essential and I can't wait for the protest one.
of course john peel means something here!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z4ObZ3rWLQnow this is great! it's short history of the rough trade shops and label by antifolk' musician Jeffrey Lewis ( who's three albums on rough trade are very good indeed) it's funny, historically accurate and catchy. I wish i could have done this!
