this week's thoughts...
After what seems like months with hardly any records out, there's a huge pile of great singles for you this week! Record of the week goes to the excellent debut single from The Early Years, already a big favourite in the shop! The other close contender is the second single from Swedish band The Horror The Horror - we reckon they're pretty damn good! Another band that you may not know, but are worth checking are Bright Space who's debut single is out too. The other 'biggies' this week come from Belle & Sebastian, The Arctic Monkeys, (José González on vinyl and DVD, CD was last week!), and last but by no means least ¡Forward, Russia! who played a short set in the shop on Sunday and were absolutely fantastic! Other goodies this week come from Bent Moustache (good old fashioned 80s style indie noise!), Cat Power (lovely first track from the new album), Echoboy (fuzzy, electro-tinged psyche pop), Our Lunar Activities (a bit of a Scottish supergroup!), South (back with a new New Order influenced sound), Sunshine Underground (the 'next big thing' from Leeds?), Test Icicles (two 7"s each with a different version), and finally the Xtra Mile Recordings split 7" (the second in their series of 4). Albums wise we have newies Regina Spektor, Sweet Billy Pilgrim and Team LG. The Beautiful Newborn Children mini album now gets a UK release, there's a remastered release of Pavement's classic "Slanted And Enchanted" LP, and the Ryan Adams album is now in on 180g import vinyl. So forget the New Year diet plan, there are plenty of tasty morsels for you to get your teeth into this week!

Hello folks!
A big week for albums this week, with debuts from Arctic Monkeys (already a shop favourite!), Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Kooks (more about them later!), Film School (shoegazery indie), My Architects (on Fierce Panda) and Jenny Lewis (Front woman from Rilo Kiley). Excellent newies also from Cat Power (vinyl soon), Tortoise & Bonnie Prince Billy (another shop favourite!), Broken Social Scene, Clearlake and Sing Sing. The new Richard Ashcroft album comes in a limited and normal version. The man himself very kindly signed a few copies of the normal version for us, we split them between mailorder and the shop. The mailorder ones are all sold out, but if you're a shop customer get in quick and you might be lucky!
Two comps worth checking: New York Noise volume 2 and the new Rough Trade Shop Counter Culture. Also, vinyl releases of latest albums from Laura Veirs and My Morning Jacket and the CD version of Beck's "Guerolito".
Record Of The Week this week goes to the Isobel Campbell And Mark Lanegan single, which is superb - can't wait for the album! We also have the second limited edition CD single from And His Voice Became, which is a Picc Recs exclusive. There are three limited edition singles from a new label - Reveal: Joan As Police Woman, Kris Drever and Deep Elem (all worth checking out!). I really like the Robyn G Shiels single, and there are also goodies from Rumble Strips (on Transgressive), Bring Your Own Pet, Beck and Sing Sing. Back to the Kooks: We've got some rather tasteful t-shirts to give away. If you want to be entered into the draw to win one, simply put 'ENTER THE RAFFLE' in the special instructions bit when you buy the album, or if you come in the shop, just ask to be added to the list at the counter! So, plenty of great stuff to get your ears round this week!

The intricate, intimate and hushed beauty of the Holly Throsby album sweeps all the other contenders away this week. If you like singer songwriters such as Cat Power and Nina Nastasia, then is most definitely for you! Other treats for you this week include the wonderful Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan album - this would've been ROTW, but it's only on CD this week (vinyl due soon) and anyway, Darryl beat me to it with the Holly Throsby album! The Grizzly Bear album looks set to be a shop favourite too. There's the debut solo album from Lou Rhodes (from Lamb), a reissue of the Cat Power debut and there's a great comp from Sympathy For The Record Industry: "Alright, This Time Just The Girls, Vol. 2". The new Durutti Column album sounds great, as do both the East River Pipe album and the Robyn G Shiels debut. Singles from Tunng, Young People, Greg Murray, Mogwai, and The Go! Team are all worth checking, along with remix 12"s of Sons And Daughters and Clearlake. Short and very sweet this week!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
We have a three-way tie for record of the week, with Coldcut's "Sound Mirrors", The Shortwave Set's "Repeat To Fade" and the reissue of The Go! Team's "Ladyflash" all doing the do for me.
In the end I went for "Ladyflash" 'cos it's just such a joyous piece of music, and we all need a bit of joy in our lives, don't we?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
We had Grizzly Bear's off-kilter avant-indie album on vinyl recently (direct from the band), and now the CD is issued officially in Europe. If you already have the the vinyl, you may want to also consider the CD too, 'cause it has a load of extra tracks and remixes spread across the double CD package. For those who missed the vinyl, we've re-listed that too!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Miss Kittin; she's the electronique Sonique, singing over her own and other people's records on her not-mixed (although it sounds pretty mixed to me) live DJ CD compilation. It's the future you know.

I'm not actually here this week! At the time of sending this mailout, I'll probably be in a bar in Prague celebrating my birthday! So, I'm writing this on Saturday, which all seems a bit confusing (it doesn't take much!), and I'm dead busy trying to get everything sorted out, so I'll keep things brief. Record Of The Week goes to the debut album from Smokers Die Younger, which I've been listening to on promo for the past few months, and think is fantastic! Other close contenders come from Dead Disco, the Don's Mobile Barbers/Pacific Ocean Fire split 10", The Organ and The Meligrove Band. A good selection of albums this week, including The Archie Bronson Outfit, Calexico (ROTW in Americana), Pretty Girls Make Graves, Ladyfuzz and of course Morrissey. There's also a handful of Sonic Youth related reissues, and some great compilations too: Exit Music - Songs With Radio Heads, Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited and Zero - A Martin Hannett Story. There's a pile of singles too, but half of 'em have probably sold out by now, so I'll leave you to scan through whats left yourselves! Cheers Laura
PS The Flaming Lips CD hasn't arrived yet, but it's due any minute, so keep checking those just in pages...
--------------------------------------------------------------------
ROTW goes to the avant-tronica album from Piccadilly favourites Larsen, their fifth and probably best album.
Pushing that hard for the weekly prize were the strangely named 3/4 Had Been Eliminated, Slomo, the superb Not Alone box set, Arthur Russell (ROTW in electronica), Piano Magic, and Terrestial Tones amongst many others.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
With the vinyl versions of the already chart topping (on downloads alone) (HOW many times did you see that as a news item on Sunday!?) "Crazy" not due 'til next week (Balearic pop-funk we're calling it), then it was a toss up between the two rockier cuts (JJ Cale or High Feelings) for record of the week.
In the end we went for the latter, as we like to offer you something exclusive every now and then. Obviously anything that's already got the Moonboots seal of approval is OK with us, and this is just one sun-kissed piece of dancefloor bliss. Lovely!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The next set of Arthur Russell oldies gets my vote for record of the week this week - this is just really lovely. I'm also very impressed with the latest Anticon release - possibly their best yet!

indie
Yet another busy week this week, with not just a heap of singles, but a good bunch of albums too. The pick of the albums is the debut from Howling Bells, which is just fantastic. Other goodies include Absentee, Dirty Pretty Things debut, John Smith (lovely folky stuff), Black Heart Procession, a Flaming Stars compilation, a classic reissue from A Witness and both Adem and Snow Patrol on vinyl. Singles wise, The Lodger single is the pick of the bunch, claiming the Record Of The Week prize. Close contenders being: Aliens (ex Beta Band folk), Sonic Youth (Darryl's pick of the week - of course!), Voxtrot and Hafdis Huld. There were a couple of Dance To The Radio 7"s too from Yes Boss and Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames, but both of these have sold out over the weekend - sorry! Local band releases this week from Autokat, The Deadbeats and National Forest. There's a load of other singles besides this, but there's just too many to mention here. Three DVD releases this week too: A look at the life of Pete Doherty, (incase you don't know enough about him already!) a PJ Harvey live collection, and the excellent Wilco DVD now edited down to one disc. And that's about it! Have a good week Laura
post rock
This week sees a new label to us, Feed & Seed, all the releases are highly limited each with individual packaging. Drone masters Hildegard have three releases on the label and their latest release, "Tape For The Tuning Of The Ear" takes the ROTW spot.
downbeat
Hidden in amongst the lushness of The Superimposers and cuts from the "Taster 3" EP, electronic sounds of Cubik & Origami, easy mellowness of Kad and leftfield cuts and reworks by RJD2 and Matthew Herbert is the totally bonkers "£5 An Hour" EP by Hansel The Unicorn: Free jazz, jazz-funk, hip hop and downbeat all on the one 45!!
electronica - experimental
Matmos return after their 'difficult' "Civil War" album, with this new extravaganza "The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth Of A Beast". It takes the ROTW award over the likes of Black Dog, Miller + Fiam, Schengen, Urban Tribe (ROTW in techno), Found, August Stars, Cibelle, Sun Ra and the experimental Yoshihide / Laswell / Tatsuya release on Tzadik.

Hello from Vinyl Valley (no, we've never heard of that name either)!
If you checked the Observer's travel section Escape on Sunday you would've seen that we're one of the best shops IN THE WORLD! But of course...
Right, now I've deflated my head, I can tell you that you might want to check out the following days and nights...
Weetabeat reprise their irregular yet frequent DJ nights TWICE this week in different venues. Monday night sees them celebrate Piccadilly staff member Rob's birthday at Font Bar (9pm - 1am) while Tuesday finds them down in Fallowfield at Snook Bar (8pm - late). They will be playing rock 'n' roll, hip hop, funk, electric-soul, disco and acid R'n' B. As seen in The Guardian Travel section on Saturday!
The Cohesion Live Festival (Sat 23rd Sept, Platt Fields 12 - 9.30pm £19.50 + booking fee) features a fantastic line up that includes Elbow, Badly Drawn Boy, Graham Coxon, Richard Hawley, Lou Rhodes, I Am Kloot, Toolshed, Durutti Column, The Longcut, Andy Rourke (DJ set), Doves (DJ set), Jane Weaver, Roland Shanks, The KFC, Mayming, Stubs, Nine Black Alps, Cherryghost, Puressence, Redcarsgofaster, Bureau, Answering Machine, The Sunshine Underground, Jeremey Warmsley and much more. It's all about raising money for Manchester Aid to Kosovo, so a good cause too!
Our own Danny Webb returns from a two week sojourn on the other side of The Channel, and swings right back into DJ action by hooking up with Neil for some El Diablo's fun and frolicking (Fri 22nd Sept, Mint Lounge, 10pm - 4am, £3 before minight).
Midnight Mushrumps return with a Harvest Disco at Common (Sun 24th Sept, 6pm - midnight, free), so get your veg (and that can of soup hiding at the back of the cupboard) out for the lads.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another busy week this week, with some cracking singles for you! First up, Record Of The Week goes to the debut single from The Mighty Roars, with the Bromheads Jacket 7" (with stencil sleeve), The Fury Of The Headteachers 7" and Pull Tiger Tail ltd CD (7" is on its way - keep an eye on the Just In section!) all hot on it's heels. I also really like the Tenebrous single, the Soft Lightes is rather lovely and The Howling Bells 7" is ace (of course). You're all already going mad for the Die! Die! Die! 7", and heading in a more upbeat direction the 12"s from The Harrisons and The Klaxons are both flying out. Gordon Anderson (aka Lone Pigeon) is back with his new incarnation The Aliens, as is his brother Kenny who you all know as King Creosote. What else is there? A new Doloroso 7" (featuring ex Simian folk), Cord (on 2 different 7"s), Sound Team (on red vinyl), The Walkmen (on 7" picture disc - cd was last week), Sparklehorse (third in the series - and a CD compiling all three) and finally the lovely debut from Scott Matthews. The big album this week is the Bonnie Prince Billy album which we've been playing loads in the shop and is gonna be high in our albums of the year. Please don't ask for a limited edition version - the record company would only let us have 5 - which is rubbish to start with - and then 3 of them were faulty! So we ended up with 2 which went to staff - didn't even get one myself! Other albums worthy of a mention include the off kilter electro-pop of Kings Have Long Arms, the epic soundscapes of Amusement Parks On Fire, the cool punk-funk of The Rapture (not on vinyl - booo!), the dramatic pop of the Veils, and the debut albums from The Immediate, Get Cape. Wear Cape.Fly, and 5 'o' Clock Heroes. And last but not least the Richard Swift album which we've had on vinyl for a while is now on CD. And with that, I'm off on holiday for a few days to eat lots of nice food, drink lots of guinness and generally laze around! Perfect!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello folks, Blimey, is it August already? Well no actually, I'm writing this intro mid June! Just think, by the time you read this England might've won the World Cup (or more likely been knocked out by Brazil in the semis...or even Portugal in the quarters DOH!) As you can tell, football is at the front of my mind right now, but other things HAVE happened at Piccadilly this year too, including... Winning the Music Week Best Independent Record Store award! We went down to that London and came back to Manchester with a small statuette, a bottle of champagne and the knowledge that hard work does pay off in the end. I'm sure some people have the idea that we stand about all day chatting about music (that's just Brad!), but obviously there's much more to it than that. In the shop you get served by friendly staff who all have an encyclopaedic knowledge of records, while hidden away in the mailorder dept everyone pulls out all the stops to get parcels out to you as quick as possible. Meanwhile, the rest of us are busy writing reviews, recording MP3 clips and scanning sleeves for our weekly e-mail guide of new releases. We just never stop! Instore-wise iForward Russia! kicked off the year with a great set in January, while Soledad Brothers brought raw blues all the way from Detroit. Meanwhile, out of the shop we enjoyed gigs by The Horror, The Horror, Voice Of The Seven Woods, Shack, Tapes 'n Tapes and The Early Years. Mark enjoyed himself so much at Sunn O))) that he actually blacked-out and fell over, so strong was the American band's sonic force. Rock'n'roll eh! On a playing-records-in-bars-and-clubs tip, Best Foot Forward stepped up to inviting guests from outside the city with the wonderful Quiet Village spinning some discs, while Friends Of Music branched-out into a full live show featuring the amazing Jack Rose (also one of our gigs of the year). Meanwhile Danny continued his mission to DJ at every (decent) club night round town, clocking up an impressive five gigs over the May Bank Holiday weekend. As were only halfway through the year, we've not gone the whole hog and done our usual end of year voting system for the albums listed. Instead, between us, we've come up with 10 'Piccadilly Essentials' which we think you really SHOULD own, and then a further 40 recommended releases all in ALPHABETICAL order, to give you an idea of what's been on the Picc Recs and staff stereos so far this year. The 'Piccadilly Essentials are all available at a BARGAIN PRICE while stocks last, so check 'em out! So I'm sure you'll agree there's plenty here to keep your ears busy until our end of year round up in December.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
originally set up in the UK in 1992 it has since garnered a reputation for unearthing many groundbreaking acts and labels. The likes of the White Stripes, Devendra Banhart and lately Tunng (No.2 in our end of year albums chart) amongst many others were all introduced to the UK market by Cargo before being catapulted into mainstream media by major label backing. The 'Cargo collective' is a monthly pick , which you'll probably see adverts for in the likes of the Fly, Plan B and Artrocker magazines, of the best of the distributers output across a huge cross section of genres and styles, We've collected September's selection into this handy 'feature' to make it nice and easy for you to find.
